Introduction:

The Old Britannia Schoolhouse, formerly S.S. #12, Toronto Township, was built in 1852 and closed in 1959. It is located in the heart of Mississauga, just south of the Peel Board Office on Highway 10 at Matheson.
In 1982 the Peel Board of Education restored the schoolhouse and established and funded a programme there for elementary and secondary students. Classes visited for a day to experience a school day similar to one experienced by rural pupils "long ago". In this way students received a "living history lesson" to enrich their regular classroom studies.
Due to budget restraints the 1992-93 school year saw the schoolhouse programme cut back and in 1993-94 the programme closed.
In September 1994 the programme was re-implemented on a more cost recovery basis with funds now being raised in part through user fees and community partnerships. The programme is operated by the Community Education Department of the Peel Board of Education.

Our Grade 3's Go Back in Time to 1897

Last June, Mrs. M's Grade 3 class visited the Britannia Schoolhouse to experience a day of school as it was 100 years ago. The schoolmistress, Miss Wilson, was there to make sure that the strict rules of the times were followed. Below is a class acrostic poem that the students made to tell about their day at Britannia Schoolhouse.

B
Black
Boards...
We used small blackboards made of slate to write on. Slate is a special kind of rock.
R
Rules...
In the Britannia Schoolhouse, Miss Wilson's rules were very strict. You couldn't talk without permission
I
Ink...
In 1897 they used ink. They had little ink wells at the top right corner of their desk. They wrote by dipping a straight pen into the ink well.
T
Ties...
At the Britannia schoolhouse, boys had to wear ties or bowties and the girls had to wear hats.
A
Acting...
We were acting as if we were in school 100 years ago. I got my hair pinned up to the wall because they said I chased farmer McLeod's cows and now they will not make milk. I had to act sad and embarrassed but I had a hard time because I wanted to laugh.
N
Names...
Miss Wilson called the boys Master followed by their name. She called the girls Miss .
N
Not allowed...
We were not allowed to do anything without permission or we would get "punished",
I
Inside...
Inside the Britannia Schoolhouse you had to be careful how you touched things that we don't have in school now. It is a museum.
A
Always...
In the olden days they always had desk drill. First you sit up straight in your desk. Then you turn to the right. Then you stand up straight. Then you turn to the teacher and sit down.
S
Swings...
We used the swings to play with at recess. The only recess was at lunch time.
C
Corn...
A person in our class wrote a love letter and had to kneel on corn with his arms straight out.
H
Health Inspection
On the blackboard, Miss Wilson wrote Health Inspection Rules. Some rules were that we must have clean finger nails clean hands and never wear nail polish.
O
One hundred...
One hundred years ago they dressed differently. The girls wore long dresses and bonnets. The boys wore bow ties and suspenders.
O
Office...
Miss Wilson had an office in her classroom because there was no principal and the school had only one room
L
Little...
The school had only one room. Little students would all sit in one row and then the rows went from smallest to biggest. The big students were opposite the little students.
H
Health Inspection
Miss Wilson would do a health inspection every day.
O
Outhouse..
One hundred years ago the boys and girls used an outhouse. We did not use it but Miss Wilson told us it was full of bugs.
U
Union Jack...
The Union Jack was the flag we used instead of the Canada flag. It is the flag of England.
S
Swings, Strap, Stilts, Spelling Bee...
These were all important things in the olden day school
E
Everybody
Everybody sat in rows because Miss Wilson didn't want us to talk.
