This Fall, two of our Sawmill Valley Primary Classes studied pigs and other farm animals at the Royal Winter Fair. Here are some of the stories they have to tell.

Farrowing Unit: The piglets are sleeping under the warm light after eating.
Making Sure
At the Fair I saw a Farrowing Unit. A Farrowing Unit is so the sow doesn't hurt her piglets. A Farrowing Unit has a metal bar that goes up and forward and down around the mother pig.
When the piglet is older and gets taken away from its mother's milk, it is called a weaner.

Too Big, Too Small
We saw the farmers taking boards and trying to push the big pigs into cages. I felt bad because they put them in the cages. The cages were small.

Some Advice:
Do not stand behind a cow
Showers and Dryers
At the Royal Winter Fair we saw a cow getting showered. First the farmer led the cows to the showering room. In the showering room the walls were covered in plastic. The floor was wet all over. There were lots of showers on the walls. The blow dryers dried the cows when they were wet.

More Showers
I saw a cow getting a shower, The small showering room looked like a horse stable but it had a hose and it had some bars around the cow.

Duck, Duck Dog
At the Royal Winter Fair we saw a hilarious Dog Show. There were dogs chasing ducks. The dogs made the ducks duck down to go through a tunnel and a bridge. It was incredibly funny.

They went to different obstacles. The dogs chased the ducks around pylons to make a four leaf clover.

Jim the Trainer got a fence and caught the five ducks and surrounded them. The three dogs got in a triangle so the ducks couldn't get out. I've never seen three dogs chase five ducks before.

The Mounties Make Designs
At the Royal Winter Fair there was a huge stadium with dirt on the ground. The Mounties were riding powerful horses. The Mounties controlled the horses and made different patterns to music...
Our Musical Ride Song
The Mounties made a circle,
The Mounties made a star,
They made a wagon wheel for us
While we were sitting up and far.

It was our first time to see a real horse up close. It was FANTASTIC!
