Home-
Child

by
Martha
Howarth-Attard
Home child is the sensitively told story of Arthur, a young orphaned boy torn from familiar surroundings in England and shipped to Canada to work for nothing more than grudgingly given room and board. Arthur's torments, anger and sense of injustice will be felt by readers, young and old. Who though will have the understanding and the courage to reach out to Arthur as he struggles with his new life?

What I Liked I think that Home Child is a very historical book. I also think that Sadie's older sister Laura is a real snob. Mrs.Wilson is a snob too until Sadie burns up the kitchen. Arthur is a very caring boy too. So overall I think the book was very good.

What I Liked I liked the part when they first picked up Arthur because that is when the whole story began to get neat. I also liked the part when he started to go to school just because it make him more of a kid, rather a slave.
What I Felt
About the Main
Character
I felt that Arthur felt left out and and that he didn't matter to anyone.
The Novel was true to life
I Chose This Word I chose true to life because these kinds of things really did used to happen in the olden days. Children were punished. It was very mean and should never happen. No one should be treated that way.
The Author might change The thing I would change is the mother's temper and attitude.
New Information
I Learned
I learned that everybody has feelings and you shouldn't treat anybody differently.

What I Liked My favourite part was when the girl stood up for the boy in front of her family.
What I Felt
About the Main
Character
I thought the main character Arthur was really sweet and should have been treated with more respect.
The Novel was true to life
I Chose This Word I chose "true to life" because it was what really would have happened in the early nineteen hundreds.
The Author might change I think the author did a great job and there is nothing I would change in this book
New Information
I Learned
I never knew how poorly home children were treated and that you could actually get a child to come help you around the house.
