A "Trojan Horse" program involves the placement of unwanted computer
instructions in a program so that the host computer will perform some
undesired/unauthorized function. The instructions enter the target system
hidden in some other message or program, thus the name Trojan Horse.
|
|
There are trojan programs circulating that can get downloaded to a computer
without the users' knowledge, much like a virus. Once on the victim's
computer, it will enable the program to disconnect the victim's modem and
then connect it to a foreign telephone number, resulting in expensive phone
charges. Some dialer programs turn off the volume on the victim's computer
so victims can't hear the dialing take place.
|
|
In order to protect yourself from this threat, internet users must do
regular SPYWARE and VIRUS scans of their computer. Another important
safeguard to stop future dialer attempts would be a firewall to control
incoming/outgoing internet traffic. Also be wary of any unwanted popups
directing you to "click on this button" to accept.
|
|
If you have been victimized by one of these scams, your computer will have
to be checked by a qualified technician in order to have the hidden program
removed.
